Dem debate #1 Liveblog attempt

We'll see how well this works, but after that "fight night" intro by CNN, I've gotta try and liveblog this mess.

This will run top-oldest bottom-newest. Time stamps will be manual, so I'll get them in as often as possible.

Edit 11:09 pm. noticed I got some name attributions wrong, think I fixed them all.
-----

Lincoln Chafee- Mayor, Senator, Governer- going over his credentials.

---

Jim Webb--I've done things other than be a politician--going over political credentials. Went over family.

----

Martin O'Malley -- Mayor Baltimore, Gov Maryland--"I learned to be an effective leader." --

Huh, he's actually acknowledging learning something. --Went over family, also.

--

Bernie Sanders-- Went right into policy, including campaign finance.
Climate change "moral responsibility" to move away from fossil fuels, leave planet for children and grandchildren. African American youth unemployment 51%, put money into education, not jails.
"can we mobilize our people to take back our government"

Biggest cheers yet.

----
8:58pm eastern.

Hillary Clinton--going over credentials--opportunity for her 1 yr old granddaughter and the granddaughters contemporaries.
Center of campaign is to raise wages. Companies should share profits with workers. Make Taxes more equal-close loopholes on wealthy. Tax cuts for middle class. Equal Pay for women, Paid family leave.

----

Hillary -- changing mind, arguing that flip flop: Response new information results in new opinions.

"I'm a progressive, but I'm a progressive who wants to get things done." paraphrase "I'm willing to compromise."

---

Sanders-- You call yourself a "democratic socialist" -- Sanders is explaining what that means
Arguing for learning from Denmark, Norway, Sweden.

moderator "but socialist is a bad word" Sanders "but it doesn't have to be."

Clinton rebutting with Capitalism is little businesses. We're not Denmark. Don't want to be Denmark.
Need to rein in Capitalism

Sanders Rebuttal: I don't disagree, but we have to remember that not every one is a small business owner and help all people
---

Chafee -- I didn't leave the Republican Party, it left me. My record hasn't changed. It now aligns with Democrats.

---

O'Malley-- Question of Zero Tolerance, He's a little hard to hear. Comment/Question on Freddie Gray. Claims that he reduced arrest rate in Baltimore and increased safety.

---

Webb -- called Affirmative Action - "Racism against whites." Claims to support it for African Americans. Is against "diversity programs for all people of color."

---

Sanders --- Sanders is saying he has a D- from NRA, question 'does he want to protect gun companies or not?"

Goes into mental health care.

Clinton Rebuttal-- Sanders is not hard enough on guns *cheers*

Sanders Rebuttal -- Wants to keep guns out of hands of people who should not have then. Exapand background checks, address straw man purchases

O'Malley Response --- We did it in Maryland (didn't explain what it was he did)-- Has people from Aurora in Audience.

Sanders and O'Malley are arguing over how far gun control can go in Senate/talking over each other.

Webb Rebuttal-- Yay, more mental illness stigmatization.

(aside--this guy comes across as a jackass)

Chafee discussion---Try to work with the gun lobby, can we change this and find common ground.

O'Malley rebuttal -- NRA lies to voters in Maryland

---

Clinton --- "Did you underestimate the Russians?"
Response Putin is bullying us in general and in Syria in particular.

Sanders response-can't hear---Somethingsomething
Iraq was a mistake. I don't support troops in Syria.

Clinton -- no one does

Chafee -- criticizing Clinton for voting for Iraq war, says Clinton has poor judgment.

Clinton rebuttal -- Obama trusts my judgement. We don't need troops there, We need a coalition of people/countries around Syria.

Sanders Rebuttal -- thinks that no fly zone in syria is bad. thinks he predicted what happened in Iraq.

---

Sanders Question-- When you use force? Voted to stop Osama Bin Ladin, voted to stop ethnic cleansing

---
Question to group: Is Hillary too quick to use force?

O'Malley  -- Seems to be saying yes in 300 words.

Clinton is smirking and looking like she's really trying to not snap at people.

Sanders doesn't seem to understand how the debate works *sigh*

Clinton Rebuttal -- No fly zone in Syria to get Russia to the negotiation table.

----

Webb -- Benghazi? I'm not sure I understand the question.

He has run over his time, and he is now going against China?
---

It is now 9:32 pm eastern

---

Sanders Response -- Putin is trying to save face and is regretting his choices.

----

Clinton -- Should you have seen Benghazi coming?
She is explaining what was going on at the time. We need to send Diplomats to dangerous places, so that we can try to prevent things.

Clinton is nodding in agreement with Chafee arguing that we need better intelligence in those areas.

---

I can't keep up. they're discussing whether or not Sanders can be a credible commander in chief as he was a conscientious objector in Vietnam. Sanders argues that War needs to be last resort.

---

Chafee  is going after Webb for a falsehood regarding Russia. Again, they're bouncing topics faster than I react.

---

Worst security threat
Everyone is giving different answers

---
Commercial break
---

///commentary -- 5 people is clearly too many on stage for the 2 minute discuss and 1 minute rebuttal format CNN chose. Also the moderators suck at actually getting people to give up the floor. I feel like they need a talking stick like a class of kindergartners, ffs.

It is currently 9:44 pm Eastern.

-----

Clinton -- emails How do handle crises? she's testifying for congress about it. Pointing out that the Benghazi committee is to drag her numbers down
Saying there are other questions that are more important.

---

Sanders Rebuttal -- Agrees with Clinton, "The American people are sick and tired about hearing about your damned emails!"

*handshake* and chuckle, standing ovation
---

Chafee -- This is a huge issue -- damages American credibility -- we already need to repair work. Implies she has ethical lapses

"Clinton do you want to respond?" "No"

*standing ovation*

---

question "Do black lives matter or do all lives matter?"

Sanders -- "black lives matter" we need to combat instiutional racism and overhaul our criminal justice system.

O'Malley -- acknowledged BLM is a movement and that black lives are undervalued. "black lives matter"

to Clinton: What would you do that Obama hasn't?
Reponse We need to fix criminal justice system. Feels this is a bipartisan issue. We need a new "new deal" for communities of color

Webb "all lives matter" claims he started the national debate about it back in '06, I think.

Sanders gets a different question- " what would you do about income inequality that Obama hasn't?"
Answer Create jobs by repairing infrastucture, pay equality, make college free

Clinton -- How can you represent the middle class when you are part of the 1%? Make sure that all people have the chance to make the same rise from lower paying to wealthy.
Economy does better with a Democrat in the white house.

O'Malley -- Agrees with Sanders, adds that Glass-Steagal needs to be re-implemented.

Clinton -- says leave it alone but we have to worry about investments and shadow banking. Says she agrees with putting attention on the banks

Sanders keeps raising his hand.

Sanders -- I don't agree her policy is harder than mine - fraud is currently a business model. I fought deregulation of banks in '99.

Clinton response -- I went to Wall Street, told them stop it when i was a NY Senator. Want the same thing, different method, but my method is the one that work.

Sanders -- Congress does not regulate Wall Street, Wall Street regulates Congress

Webb is trying to break in, and failing.

Chafee -- the banks control 65% of GDP now. going after Clinton for not supporting Glass-Steagal.

---

Sanders voted against the bank bailout. Thinks it was wrong to ask the middle-class

---

Webb thinks the system is rigged.

Talking about a Windfall tax, no so sure what this is going on. (this guy seems to non-sequiter  a lot or I can't tell how his logic works.)

Getting scolded for wasting time.

---

Chafee is admitting he didn't know what he was doing for his first vote in Senate, lol.

---

Sanders is laying out how he wants to make public schools free. It's by taxing speculation on Wall Street.

Clinton rebuttal -- wants to refinance college debt to a lower interest rate. Thinks that people should have a job ~10 week in exchange for tuition.
Medicare for all Americans-- Enhance benefits for Social Security for impoverished people. No defunding, make sure it's still around.

Sanders lift cap on taxable income.
---

Sanders -- Immigration-- why should Latino voters trust you? We need a path to citizenship, let them come out of the shadows

--

Clinton, undocumented workers get ACA access? Not necessarily full access, but yes, everyone should be able to be healthy.

---

O'Malley -- We are a nation of immigrants-- we need to help people get healthcare.

---

Webb is also fine with better immigration, and healthcare for undocumented workers.

---

Clinton is trying to break in
Follow up -- Wants to point out that they disagree on details, but that everyone on that stage is not willing to demonize humans, real people who want to work. IE the Republican party.

---

O'Malley -- Maryland has offered in state tuition to undocumented children, and it's been successful.

--

Need a break, 10:20 pm

--
Sanders is talking about VA hospitals.

--

Chafee and Clinton voted for PATRIOT. Claims that a warrants were supposed to be required.

---

Clinton thinks that the tapping/Patriot act was good. Also says it was supposed to be done with warrents.

---

Sanders voted against Patriot act.
Yes he would stop the tapping of phones, tracking of calls, websites, emails needs to stop.

---

Chafee -- Snowden should be able to come home.

---

Clinton -- He had legal ways to do what he did, he didn't. but he stole important information. Snowden needs to "face the music"

---

Chafee -- he's guilty, he ran to Russia

---

Sanders -- he needs to face a court for breaking the law, but his assistance of finding out the government was doing should be considered to balance that.

----

Webb -- Data collection is ok, if it's destroyed after a period of time. Not saying anything about Snowden

---

Not a third term of Obama? to All

Chaffee-- end the wars, need a new paradigme

O'Malley -- shrink banks, protect middle class

Clinton -- Well, first woman president, kinda obvious
Policy? Support and surpass Obama.

Sanders -- Power of Corp America, Wall Street, etc. is through a political revolution, gov't needs to be encouraged.

Webb -- Use of Executive authority, use Congress and with Congress

Sanders --- we need to raise public consciousness, and teach so that we can bring change.

O'Malley -- We need a Green revolution.

----

Commercial break, Supposed to be 2 hours, apparently they're going for that third.

----

Clinton -- I know how to find common ground and stand my ground.

O'Malley -- I respect Clinton, but we need new people.

Clinton Rebuttal -- Don't vote for my name, vote for my positions. "We can't have a Republican succeed Obama."

----

Sanders -- I'm the only one who isn't a millionare, and the only one without a SuperPac

---
Topic: Climate Change

O'Malley -- Extend tax credits for solar and wind. Solve the problem of a non-clean energy.

Webb -- Pro offshore drilling, pro Keystone Pipeline, pro coal -- Believes in nuclear power, we need to work world wide at China and India to work on Global warming.

Sanders -- Pope Francis is right, this is a moral issue. Scientists say we need to be bold. Fossil fuels are funding Republican party. We need to work with China, India, Russia.

Clinton -- This is what I've been doing, Get China/India to agree to work on it.

---

Mandated Paid Leave

Clinton -- California is already doing it. Republicans are trying to scare us out of it. This does not have to put burdens on small businesses.

Clinton just got a standing ovation for showing the hypocrisy of the Republican party "small government -- unless it's a womens right to choose"

Sanders and O'Malley agree.

---

Weed -- legalize it?

Sanders -- rethink war on drugs

Clinton -- I'm not ready to take a national position on legalizing it nationally, however, imprisoning is a overkill response. Medical marijuana is fine.

---

Sanders -Can you get Republicans to compromise?
People, you need to vote them out.

---

commercial break 10:49 pm eastern

---

final Question 15 s answer:

Which enemy are you proud of

Chafee - coal lobby

O'Malley -- NRA

Clinton -- NRA, Iran, few others, the Republicans
